“You know you’re in love when you can’t fall asleep
because reality is finally better than your dreams.”
― Dr. Seuss
I have a guilty secret that I am going to share with you: I love to watch murder mysteries, cop shows, intense drama. Currently I’m watching “House of Cards” (the American version). It is an intense show and I love watching each episode. There is a lot of variety of deep human nature in this show and a lot of seemingly unredeemable characters.
However today while crocheting and watching this show, one of the characters named Freddie, tells his grandson, “The truth is you ain’t never gonna be President. It’s just like them basketball players you got posters of. They say you can do anything, be a star too. But they were born to be 7 feet tall and if they wasn’t then what would they have? Nothing. . . It’s good to have dreams, just so long as they not fantasies. You let anybody sell you that shit it’s your own damn fault.”
Pow! I sat here thinking for a few minutes and realized there were many things I had fantasies of being in life that was never going to happen because of who I really am as a human being. I was never going to be able to play guitar well or be a concert pianist no matter how much I loved music and was willing to practice for hours and hours on end. My fingers are too short! I can barely reach an octave and then it has a muddy quality. I was never going to be a doctor because although I love science, biochemistry makes my head swim and much of math makes my eyes cross. More importantly it is not in my nature. Nursing and caring and empathetic effort is much more in my wheel house. Besides, I quit wanting to be a doctor when I realized that to be a medical missionary I would have to do without flush toilets.
“You may say I’m a dreamer, but I’m not the only one. I hope someday you’ll join us. And the world will live as one.”
― John Lennon
What I do have is a powerful imagination and a lot of creativity and intuitive insight. So I can crochet and knit beautiful things, write fairly well, turn my dreams and thoughts to the occasional poem and coach others along the way of life. My dream for the past year has been to be an excellent transformative life coach. It is within my ability and desire and is not a fantasy. This is a dream I can make a reality.
