“Toto, I have a feeling we’re not in Kansas anymore.”
― L. Frank Baum
I’m not in Oklahoma anymore and I’m not in Kansas either. I’m in the glorious state of Washington, living in a rain forest tucked in between mountains and beside a river. I’ve also recently retired from full-time shift work as a nurse practitioner. Now that I’m a Certified Life Coach I’m moving forward into my new life and creating new possibilities for my future. The road may be gravel and dirt but that is even more appealing to me than the yellow brick road.
“There are as many worlds as there are kinds of days,
and as an opal changes its colors and its fire
to match the nature of a day, so do I.”
― John Steinbeck
In this world, with my new learning and new experiences I’m moving forward. It has not been easy and frankly my dears it is a little scary. I’m practicing the answer to the question we all get when we meet someone new: What do you do? For many years I’ve said, “I’m a nurse practitioner.” So many years in fact, that saying, “I’m a life coach,” is really hard to say. But. I’m practicing.
“We all want to break our orbits,
float like a satellite gone wild in space,
run the risk of disintegration.
We all want to take our lives in our own hands
and hurl them out among the stars.”
― David Bottoms
Yes! That has always been me wanting to take my life in my own hands and hurl it out among the stars and see what happens. Up until now, I’ve always taken the easy, obvious paths. I had to work hard, but working hard is easy. Digging deep and being me is the hard part. I know you have felt that too. When people ask me why I chose to be a life coach I tell them my story:
The first time I heard about life coaching I said, out loud, “What kind of bullshit is that? You don’t need a life coach. You need to get off your butt and life your life!” Then as is usual, the Universe, said, “Oh really? Well what do you think about this?” Suddenly I was in need of help and that help was an answer to the question “Now what do I do.” I took a course called Feminine Power and it was fabulous but I was still struggling. I decided to talk with one of the coaches, Marilyn Hager. Wow! As a transformative life coach talking with her changed my life. One of the changes was knowing I wanted to be a life coach. AND now I am one.
Life coaching isn’t to make you live your life because you are incapable of living life. It is to help you find the life inside you so that the living your life is fulfilling and creative and alive. That’s what happened for me with Marilyn and her coaching.
“Forget what we became,
what matters is what we’ve become,
and our potentials to overcome.”
― Aniekee Tochukwu Ezekiel
No matter where you are in life or what problems you are facing, you are continually becoming you. What you become and the new potentials you create can be just the thing to hurl you to the stars.
