Rewriting My Dreams

“The real war will never get in the books.”
― Walt Whitman

Last night, after we came home from a Christmas Party in Issaquah, we were chilling out playing games and watching TV. I decided to watch the news. Big mistake. I spent the night having nightmares of David and I being shot by terrorists. I would wake up, go to the bathroom, get a drink of water and go back to bed. But more dreams kept coming. Then in the middle of one of the nightmares I decided to rewrite the dream but the shooters kept coming and killing us no matter how I re-scripted the scene.  One scene I remember I was telling the gunman, “Here. Shoot me here in the flabby part of my arm.” So he did. It hurt like hell until he shot me in the chest and I was dead.

“It does not do to dwell on dreams and forget to live.”
― J.K. RowlingHarry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone

The reason I’m sharing this with you today, is that we all are stunned and saddened and grieving over yesterday’s terrible events. And it feels and seems pretty hopeless. But it is time to let the nightmares go and get back to living.

“Accepting that life is insane,
that bad things happen to good people
and that you can find the courage
to be grateful for the good in every situation
and still move forward is hard
(even terrifying), but heroic.”
― Richie Norton

David pointed out that all of the people who died were probably just like us–good people trying to live good lives and trying to do good things for other people. That is probably why this hurts so very much. But we still have to move forward. Regardless of how hopeless it feels. We each must do our heroic best to continue to be good people doing good things for other people.

“You may say I’m a dreamer,
but I’m not the only one.
I hope someday you’ll join us.
And the world will live as one.”
― John Lennon

I’ve used this John Lennon quote before and I’ll use it many more times in my life. I will still have dreams and some of them will be nightmares that I can’t rewrite. However. I can write the script of how I live my life. I choose, as I do everyday, believing that life is meant for love, learning, growing, being, giving, and when possible writing a good script for our dreams too.

“Hold fast to dreams,
For if dreams die
Life is a broken-winged bird,
That cannot fly.”
― Langston Hughes

Let go of the nightmares
Believe in your love
Write your own dreams
They are your life.
